Training
1) Basic first aid
Office based
This
course is designed to train office based staff basic first aid.
Subjects covered include cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
treatment of bleeding, treatment of muscle, bone and joint injuries,
treatment of burns, poisoning and minor medical emergencies. Students
are taught the application of slings, bandages and dressings, and how
to summon help. The types of injuries concentrated on are those most
commonly associated with the office and small workshop in a rural or
urban environment with available medical support and back up. The
course lasts 3- 4 days depending if the client has any work specific
conditions they wish to be covered. Assessment.
(Course duration 3-4 days)
Remote location based
This course is designed to teach “field based” staff basic first aid. The course lasts 4 days and teaches all the subjects taught to the office based staff, but with an emphasis on improvisation, where normal first aid supplies are not available. The course teaches the treatment of injuries commonly encountered in the “field” environment, where medical support and back up may not be available. An additional day may be added to the course if the client has any work specific conditions they wish to be covered. Assessment. (Course duration 4-5 days) Both of these courses make use of scenario teaching applicable to the origin base.
2) Advanced first aid & Basic Trauma
This
5 day course is designed to enable the basic first aider to cope with
more severe injuries, to control/manage an incident scene and to
prepare the casualty for evacuation to the medical facility using the
client’s local non-specialist transport. The course revises the student
on all of the basic first aid techniques. It relies strongly on the use
of incident scenarios as a teaching model and places an emphasis on
student team work and leadership. The course also covers techniques in
spinal immobilisation and casualty extrication. Some advanced airway
management techniques are taught using specialist equipment available
in some advanced first aid kits. Extra days may be added to this course
at the clients request in order to cover any special requirements they
may have. On going assessment and MCQ exam.
(Course duration 5-6 days)
3) First aid instructor/trainer
This
course is designed to teach suitably qualified personnel how to provide
training in first aid. The course teaches presentation techniques,
lesson preparation and delivery, assessing methods and techniques. All
students are assessed throughout the course for quality of instruction,
team work, and first aid knowledge. Prior to starting the course
students undergo formal assessment in “First Aid and CPR”. Students
must pass this assessment to be accredited as a “FIRST AID
INSTRUCTOR/TRAINER”. (Each student may be re-tested once during the
course in this area, however basic first aid instruction will not be
provided). Ongoing assessment and MCQ exam.
(Course duration 5 days)
Automatic Defibrillation
This
course is the next step following basic or advanced first aid. It
re-assesses the student in the most critical area of first aid (CPR)
and leads on to the use of the Automated External Defibrillator.
Research has shown that where CPR buys time for the casualty, the AED
(automated external defibrillator) when available improves the chance
of survival from a heart attack by up to 60%. This course covers the
anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulatory system, and the use
of the AED with all safety requirements. Ongoing assessment and MCQ
exam.
(Course duration 2 days)
Manual Defibrillation
This
course is aimed at Doctors and Medics who have access to manual
defibrillators but do not have the need of a full (ALS) Advanced Life
Support course. The course teaches basic 3 lead rhythm interpretation,
the use of manual defibrillators, basic cardiology, advanced airway
techniques, basic drugs used in cardiac arrest and the use of
algorithms in treatment scenarios, as well as all relevant safety
procedures. Ongoing assessment and MCQ exam.
(Course duration 2.5 days)
Medical Gasses & Resuscitation
This
course is aimed at suitably trained staff that may have the need to
accompany injured personnel requiring oxygen therapy on route or those
first aid staff with access to “Entonox”, so that analgesia may be
given safely and appropriately. The course also covers revision of
resuscitation techniques and the use of airway adjuncts. Ongoing
assessment and MCQ exam.
(Course duration 2 days)
Medical Gasses & Defibrillation
In
view of the “older” work force, cardiac arrest situations are on the
increase. This course is designed to enable suitably qualified staff to
competently treat the “heart attack” victim without the use of
controlled drugs. One of the most important drugs in a cardiac arrest
is OXYGEN. Pain in a cardiac emergency may be relieved by ENTONOX which
has a 50% OXYGEN content. If the condition deteriorates then the AED
(Automated External Defibrillator) is used in conjunction with OXIGEN
therapy. High emphasis is placed on safety as oxygen and electrical
sparks don’t mix, so it is important that students master the use of
these advanced techniques correctly. When followed correctly the use of
the AED and Medical gasses saves lives. Ongoing assessment and MCQ exam.
(Course duration 2 days)
